In the 1st quarter 2017
Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine increased in both volume and value
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., in the 1st quarter 2017 the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 735,594 litres, generating first sale receipts of 4.3 million euros. When compared to the corresponding period of 2016, the quantities sold increased by 12.0% and the sales value went up by 13.8%.
These results were determined by the increase in demand by the external markets, not only from the third countries (+39.5% in volume and +29.1% in value) but also from EU countries (+5.9% in volume and +5.8% in value). Also, the sales to Mainland Portugal more than doubled. Inversely, the local market showed a decrease (-6.7% in volume and -3.1% in value). In the two more profitable external markets – USA and France – there was a year-on-year growth on first sale receipts of 60.7% and 29.9%, respectively.

Commercialisation of GPI Wine and other alcoholic beverages produced in Madeira increased in 2016
According to the same source, the commercialisation of spirits produced in Madeira topped 806 thousand litres, up by 12.2% over 2015 generating 3.9 million euros in receipts (3.6 million euros in 2015). The increase in the sales of Madeiran Rum accounts for this growth.
The sales of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Madeiran Wine also increased; in volume by 13.1% and in the sales value by 5.8%. In the case of GPI (Protected Geographical Indication), the change rates were -7.9% in volume and -4.3% in sales value.
