Commercialisation of “Madeira” wine increased by 1.5% in volume and by 8.1% in value

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine in 2017 stood at 3.2 million litres, generating first sale receipts of 19.1 million euros. Compared to 2016, both the quantities sold and the sales value increased by 1.5% and by 8.1%, respectively.

Exports to Japan recorded increases of 21.7% in the quantities sold and 16.9% in first sale receipts. The exports to the United States increased by 14.9% in volume and by 34.6% in receipts, now representing the main external market to the detriment of France, which revealed negative change rates (-9.6% in the quantities sold and -8.9% in value). Sales to mainland Portugal increased in volume (+44.2%) and value (+45.6%), while the sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira showed increases in both volume (+7.8%) and value (+8.6%).

89.0% of the commercialized wine was sold in bottles at the average price of €6.99 per litre, while the remaining 11.0% consisted of bulk wine sold at €2.68 per litre.

Commercialisation of embroideries, tapestries and other artifacts decreased in 2017

In 2017, the commercialisation of embroideries, tapestries and other artifacts generated 759.9 thousand euros of first sale receipts, decreasing by 6.2% compared to 2016. In 2017, more than half of the sales were directed to the national market, with the United States and Italy standing at the top of the list of importing countries of this type of goods.
