Commercialisation of “Madeira” wine decreased by 6.0% in volume and by 2.9% in value

According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine in 2019 stood at 3.2 million litres, generating first sale receipts of 18.7 million euros. Compared to 2018, the quantities sold and the sales value decreased by 6.0% and by 2.9%, respectively.

The national market decreased by 1.0% in volume and increased by 1.5% in receipts. The sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira decreased in volume (-7.5%) and in value (-5.6%). The shipments to Mainland Portugal registered an increase in volume (41.8%) and sales value (38.6%).

In the EU market the highlight goes to Germany, to where exports recorded an increase of 24.1% in quantities sold and of 22.0% in sales value. France, the main market, imported fewer Madeira Wine. In fact, there was a 16.8% drop in volume and 22.1% in value.

Exports to China recorded an increase of 25.2% in the quantities sold, but a decrease of 12.8% in first sale receipts, while the sales to the United States - the main market outside the EU - decreased by 3.1% in volume and increased by 17.8% in receipts.

74.3% of the commercialized wine was sold in bottles at the average price of €7.02 per litre (€6.68 in 2018), while the remaining consisted of bulk wine sold at €2.67 per litre (€2.63 in 2018).

Commercialisation of embroideries, tapestries and other artifacts decreased in 2019

In 2019, the commercialisation of embroideries, tapestries and other artifacts generated 545.1 thousand euros of first sale receipts, decreasing by 21.8% compared to 2018. In 2019, around 45% of the sales were directed to the national market, with the United States and Italy standing at the top of the list of importing countries of this type of goods.
