In the first nine months of 2021
Exports and imports dropped compared with the same period of the previous year, but the surplus of the trade balance of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with foreign countries had an increase
According to preliminary data for the first nine months of 2021, the Region’s trade balance on goods with foreign countries recorded a surplus of 36.5 million euros, higher than in the same period of the previous year (1.9 million euros). This translates to a coverage rate of imports by exports of 127.1%, higher than that recorded in the first nine months of 2020, which stood at 101.0%.

In the first nine months of 2021, exports of companies headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 171.0 million euros, having decreased by 15.8% compared to the first nine months of 2020, while imports reached 134.5 million euros, falling by 33.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. From January to September 2021, 59.7% of the majority of exports were destined for Third Countries (i.e. outside the EU) while in what concerns to imports, the European Union countries stand out (79.7%).
