In 2021
According to provisional data, the trade balance of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with foreign countries had a surplus of 60.7 million euros
According to provisional data for 2021, the Region's balance of trade in goods with foreign countries was + 60.7 million euros, representing a continuation of the trend which started in 2017. The coverage rate of imports by exports stood at 131.9%. In 2020, the balance between exports and imports was +18.1 million euros and the coverage rate reached 107.2%.

In 2021, exports totalled 250.8 million euros, having decreased by 6.5% from the previous year, while imports stood at 190.1 million Euros, falling 24.0% from 2020. In the year under review, 61.9% of exports were destined for Third Countries (i.e. outside the EU) while 80.6% of imports came from the EU.
It should be noted, however, that these figures only refer to the foreign trade of companies based in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Most of the trade that the Autonomous Region of Madeira carries out is with the mainland. To date, there is no statistical information on this type of trade, although data on the trading of goods at regional ports, suggests that there is a large deficit in the trade with the mainland. It should also be noted the importance of companies headquartered in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC) in the international trade of both flows. According to the latest data (2020), 66.3% of exports and 65.1% of imports were made by those companies.
