In 2025
Region’s foreign trade balance recorded a surplus of 183.2 million euros
According to preliminary data for 2025, the trade balance of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a surplus of 183.2 million euros (66.3 million euros in 2024), thus maintaining the trend observed since 2017 of positive balances between exports and imports of goods with foreign countries. In 2025, the export coverage ratio of imports stood at 158.7%, higher than that recorded in the previous year, which was 122.0%.

In 2025, total exports by enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira amounted to approximately 495.2 million euros, representing an increase of 34.7% compared with 2024 and reaching a new historical maximum. Imports totalled 312.0 million euros, the second highest value in the series, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 3.5%.
In the reference year, most outward flows of goods were destined for non-EU countries (54.6% of the total), while, on the import side, European Union countries continued to account for the largest share (81.2%).
It should be noted, however, that this information refers exclusively to foreign trade carried out by enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents only a very small proportion of the total inflow and outflow of goods in the Region. In fact, the majority of the Autonomous Region of Madeira’s trade flows are conducted with Mainland Portugal, for which no statistical information is currently available. Attention should also be drawn to the role played by enterprises based in the Madeira International Business Centre (MIBC) in international trade flows. According to the most recent DREM study in this field, referring to 2024, 75.4% of exports and 41.7% of imports were carried out by enterprises headquartered in the MIBC.
