DREM releases the International Trade Statistics publication

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM is today releasing the annual "International Trade Statistics" publication, with the final results for the year 2025. To allow for year-on-year comparisons, the tables also include the results for 2023 and 2024.

This International Trade in Goods publication presents regional information on trade in goods with the European Union and Third Countries, based on data declared by enterprises headquartered in the Region.

Information was included on exports and imports (in both cases broken down into intra- and extra-Community trade) by:

• Main geographical areas and countries;
• Product group;
• Section and chapter of the Combined Nomenclature (CN);
• Classification by Broad Economic Categories (BEC);
• Classification of Products by Activity (CPA);
• Portuguese Classification of Economic Activities (CAE-Rev.3);
• Ranking of the main countries with which the ARM trades;
• Ranking of the main product groups traded.

Exports grew more than imports in 2025 and the Region widens its positive Trade Balance for goods

According to the final 2025 data on International Trade in Goods, the trade balance for goods transactions recorded a surplus of around 157.3 million euros, above the figure recorded in the previous year, when the positive Trade Balance with other countries stood at 66.3 million euros.

Analysis by type of flow shows that exports stood at 499.9 million euros in 2025, an increase of 35.9% compared with the previous year, corresponding to a change of +132.2 million euros. The value of exports in 2025 was the highest ever recorded.

The overall growth in exports was driven by exports to Intra-EU countries, which rose from 162.4 million euros in 2024 to 229.6 million euros in 2025. Trade in goods with Extra-EU countries also contributed to this increase, standing at around 205.4 million euros in 2024 and 270.3 million euros in 2025.

Imports stood at 342.6 million euros, an increase of 13.7% in 2025, that is, a rise of 41.2 million euros. This growth is mainly explained by the rise in purchases from Intra-EU countries, which reached 284.0 million euros in 2025, 34.3 million euros above the figure recorded in the previous year. Purchases from Extra-EU countries increased slightly, from 51.8 million euros in 2024 to 58.6 million euros in 2025. In 2025, the value of imports reached the second-highest figure on record (the maximum was reached in 2022, when the value of imports reached 343.4 million euros).

As mentioned above, the trade balance for goods transactions recorded a surplus of around 157.3 million euros (+91.0 million euros compared with 2024), reflecting an import coverage ratio by exports of 145.9% (122.0% in 2024).

According to the analysis carried out by DREM, companies licensed in the Madeira International Business Centre (MIBC) were responsible for exports worth 358.4 million euros in 2025, an amount higher than the 277.4 million euros observed in the previous year. The share of exports made by these companies in the total was 71.7% in the year under review (75.4% in 2024).

With regard to imports made by enterprises licensed in the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC), the value of goods purchased from foreign enterprises in 2025 stood at around 136.5 million euros, an amount higher than in the previous year, when it reached 125.8 million euros. Consequently, the proportion of imports made by enterprises licensed in the IBC relative to the total decreased from 41.7% in 2024 to 39.8% in 2025.

DREM publishes an update to the Time Series of International Trade Statistics (1976-2025)

With the release of the International Trade Statistics 2025 – Final Results publication, DREM has updated the time series of International Trade Statistics.

Although the series contains data from 1976 to 2025, the data are presented with greater level of detail for the period after 1992. A table is also made available with the main data from 1976 to 1991, which includes information on trade between the ARM and the rest of the country, that is, with the Mainland and the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In addition to the breakdown into intra- and extra-Community trade, information is made available by:

• Product group (PG);
• Section and chapter of the Combined Nomenclature (CN);
• Classification by Broad Economic Categories (BEC);
• Classification of Products by Activity (CPA);
• Portuguese Classification of Economic Activities (CAE-Rev.3).
