The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the results of Construction and Housing Statistics of Autonomous Region of Madeira for the year 2016 and at the same time updates the Time Series (1995-2016) for this statistical area (System of Indicators of Urban Operations (SIUO).

In 2016, the number of building permits and the number of completed buildings in Autonomous Region of Madeira increased

In 2016, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) housing stock was estimated at 92,914 classic residential buildings and 130,897 dwellings, representing annual growth rates of 0.1% over the previous year.

The number of works completed in the ARM stood at 187 buildings, up by 12.0% from the previous year. The number of dwellings completed also increased from 85 to 134 (+57.6%) between 2015 and 2016.

Compared to 2015 the number of building permits increased by 9.3% (248 building permits in 2016) and the dwelling permits rose by 44.1% (294 in 2016).

In 2015, the purchase and sale contracts of real estate and mortgage credit rose

The number of contracts of real estate purchase and sale increased by 37.9% vis-à-vis the previous year and the average value of the traded real estates decreased from 73.6 thousand euros in 2014 to 67.1 thousand euros in 2015.

There was also a rise in the number of contracts of loan agreements with conventional mortgage (44.8%), and the mean value of mortgaged real estates increased from 194.4 thousand euros in 2014 to 196.1 thousand euros in 2015.

In 2015, the mortgage credit granted to singular persons per inhabitant stood at 225 euros, up by 59.6% over the previous year.

In 2015, the value of performed works by construction enterprises decreased

In 2015, the value of performed works by construction enterprises with 20 and more employees headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira declined by 26.5% compared to 2014, mainly due to the decrease 31.8% in the civil engineering works.

The performed works in buildings registered an increase (9.0% compared to 2014). This rise affected both residential buildings (31.0%, corresponding to +4.0 million euros) and non-residential buildings (2.5%, corresponding to +0.9 million euros).

In 2015 there were more transacted dwellings and the average value of bank evaluation of living quarters also increased

The figures show an increase in the number and value of transacted dwellings in the Autonomous Region of Madeira between 2015 and 2016. In this year, there was a total of 2,247 transacted dwellings (up by 5.8%), which generated a sales value of 275.8 million euros (+1.0%).

In 2016, the average value of bank evaluation of living quarters increased by 0.8% (1,192 euros/m2) over 2015, following the upward trend of the previous year. 

5.5 thousand social housing dwellings in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2015

In 2015 there were around 5.5 thousand social housing dwellings (down by 0.7% from 2012) distributed by 1.6 thousand buildings. About two thirds (66.1%) of the buildings had just one dwelling, leading to a ratio of 3.3 dwellings per building.
