In 2022, the value of works carried out by construction enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) increased by 19.8% compared to the previous year
According to the provisional data from the Annual Survey of Construction Enterprises (IAEC), in 2022, the value of works performed by construction enterprises in the ARM amounted to 769.8 million euros, reflecting a rise of 19.8% compared to the previous year and constituting the highest value since 2011. Of this amount, 61.7% pertained to building works (475.1 million euros), while the remaining 38.3% were related to civil engineering works (294.7 million euros), with both components registering increases of 17.0% and 24.7%, respectively. It is noteworthy that new constructions contributed the most (share of 52.8%) to the overall value of the construction sector's activity in the ARM.
Construction companies with 20 or more employees were responsible for 73.2% of the total value of works carried out, generating around 563.3 million euros, an increase of 21.1% from 2021. In this category of enterprises, the works carried out in building construction (53.6% of the value of works carried out by enterprises of this size) had a greater impact than civil engineering works (46.4%), a situation similar to the previous year (56.1% and 43.9%, in the same order). Works carried out in building construction represented, in the reference year, around 302.0 million euros, an increase of 15.8% compared to the previous year.
For smaller-sized enterprises (under 20 employees), the value of works carried out amounted to 206.5 million euros, an increase of 16.4% from 2021. The majority came from works carried out on buildings (83.8% of the total value of works carried out by these enterprises, i.e., 173.1 million euros), with the majority (40.3%) related to new constructions in buildings.
