Number of incorporated companies exceeded the number of dissolutions (+696)
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General for Justice Policy, in 2021, the number of company incorporations (1 152) with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, was higher than the number of dissolutions (456), which resulted in a positive balance of 696 companies. Compared to the previous year, the number of incorporations went up by 349 while the number of dissolutions dropped by 117. It should be noted that the number of incorporations was the highest in the last 17 years, while the number of dissolutions was the lowest in the last 14 years.

The data broken down by economic activity show that the most pronounced positive balance was recorded in “Real estate activities” (+141), by “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (+113), “Accommodation and food service activities” (+111), followed by “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (+58), “Information and communication activities” (+53). There was no record of activities with a negative balance.
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in all municipalities: in Funchal (784 against 304), Santa Cruz (110 against 58), Câmara de Lobos (67 against 25), Ribeira Brava (48 against 12), Ponta do Sol (28 against 7), Calheta (31 against 13), Porto Santo (20 against 3), São Vicente (15 against 1), Santana (11 against 3), Porto Moniz (5 against 0) and Machico (33 against 30).
In 2021, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 2.53, higher than the national average (1.83).
Between October and December 2021, there was a positive balance between company incorporations and dissolutions (+153). Compared to the 4th quarter of 2020, when the balance was +16, there was a recovery in incorporations and a decrease in dissolutions. By activity, the most pronounced positive balance came from "Real estate activities" (+45), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+28), “Consultancy, scientific and technical activities” (+25), “Transportation and storage” and “Information and communication activities” " (+16, in both activities). On the other hand, a negative balance was recorded in “Financial and insurance activities” (-1).
In the 4th quarter of 2021, the municipalities that contributed the most to the value of the overall balance were Funchal (+104), Santa Cruz (+13), Câmara de Lobos (+11) and Ribeira Brava (+7).
