Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions was positive (+204)
According to the data provided to Statistics Portugal by the Directorate General of the Policy of Justice, in the 2nd quarter of 2022, the number of company incorporations with head offices in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher (346) than the number of dissolutions (142), which resulted in a positive balance of 204 companies (159 companies in the same quarter of the previous year). Compared to the year-ago quarter, there were 52 more incorporations and 7 more dissolutions.

The breakdown of data by economic activity shows that the most pronounced positive balance was observed in “Accommodation and food service activities” (+45), “Real estate activities” (+42), “Consultancy, scientific, technical and activities” (+34), “Administrative and support service activities” (+24), "Information and communication activities" (+15), “Construction” (+14) and “Human health and social work activities” (+12). Negative balances were recorded in “Manufacturing” (-1).
During this period, the number of incorporations was higher than dissolutions in 10 municipalities: in Funchal (235 vs 94), Calheta (17 vs 0), Santa Cruz (31 vs 19), Porto Santo (9 vs 0), Ponta do Sol (9 vs 1) Câmara de Lobos (16 vs 11), Porto Moniz (5 vs 0), Santana (5 vs 1), São Vicente (5 vs 2) and Ribeira Brava (8 vs 6). In Machico (6 vs 8), the number of incorporations was lower than dissolutions.
Between January and June 2022, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was +327 (760 incorporations vs 433 dissolutions), which compares with +384 in the same period of the previous year. By activity, the sharpest positive balances come from "Consultancy, scientific, technical and similar activities" (+81), "Real estate activities" (+75), "Information and communication activities" (+56), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+44), “Human health and social work activities” (+26), “Construction" (+22) and “Administrative and support service activities” (+20).
The municipalities that contributed the most to the value of the overall balance were Funchal (+216), Santa Cruz (+57), Calheta and Câmara de Lobos (+20, in both municipalities). Only in Machico the number of incorporations was lower than dissolutions (-24).
In the first six months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 1.76, a lower ratio than the national average (3.55)
