In the first nine months of 2023

Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions was positive (+526)

According to data provided by the Directorate General of Justice Policy to Statistics Portugal (INE), during the first nine months of 2023, the number of company incorporations (1,022) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the number of dissolutions (496), resulting in a positive balance of 526 companies. In the same period the previous year, the balance had been less favourable (+425), stemming from 1,038 incorporations and 613 dissolutions.

By industry, it is observed that the most pronounced positive balance in the referenced period came from "Real Estate Activities" (+105), "Accommodation, Food Service, and Similar Activities" (+101), "Construction" (+69), "Administrative and Support Service Activities" (+61), "Information and Communication Activities" (+55), and "Professional, Scientific, and Technical Activities" (+48). A negative balance is only observed in "Other Service Activities" (-3).

All municipalities registered more incorporations than dissolutions, in the following descending order of balance: Funchal (646 versus 379), Santa Cruz (108 versus 43), Câmara de Lobos (61 versus 21), Calheta (43 versus 6), Ponta do Sol (36 versus 5), Porto Santo (29 versus 4), Ribeira Brava (31 versus 10), Machico (35 versus 21), São Vicente (17 versus 3), Santana (10 versus 3), and Porto Moniz (6 versus 1).

In the first nine months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in Madeira was 2.06, a value lower than that observed for the country as a whole (3.75).

Narrowing the analysis to the third quarter of 2023, the data reveal that the number of company incorporations (271) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the number of dissolutions (218), resulting in a positive balance of 53 companies. Compared to the same period in the previous year, there were 7 fewer incorporations and 38 more dissolutions.
