In 2023
Balance between the incorporation and dissolution of companies stood at 713
According to data provided by the Directorate General for Policy of Justice to Statistics Portugal, in 2023, the number of company incorporations (1,363) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) exceeded the number of dissolutions (650), resulting in a positive balance of 713 companies. Compared to 2022, there were 46 more incorporations and 171 fewer dissolutions.
It is noteworthy that the number of incorporations was the highest in the last 19 years, and the balance between incorporations and dissolutions was the highest since 2005.

Breaking down the data by Economic Activity of the businesses, it is observed that for the overall positive balance in the reference year, the sectors contributing primarily were "Accommodation and food service activities" (+144), "Real estate activities" (+136), "Construction" (+84), "Information and communication activities," and "Administrative and support service activities" (both with +75). Conversely, the sectors with a negative balance were only "Other service activities" (-4) and "Extractive industries" (-1).
During the reference period, the number of incorporations exceeded dissolutions in all 11 municipalities of the ARM: in Funchal (877 versus 477), Santa Cruz (143 versus 60), Calheta (60 versus 11), Câmara de Lobos (77 versus 37), Ponta do Sol (41 versus 7), Ribeira Brava (39 versus 13), Porto Santo (30 versus 5), Machico (53 versus 30), São Vicente (20 versus 6), Santana (14 versus 3), and Porto Moniz (9 versus 1).
In the year 2023, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the ARM was 2.10, lower than the value observed for the country (3.45).
Narrowing the analysis to the 4th quarter of 2023, a positive balance between incorporations and dissolutions was recorded (+187). Compared to the 4th quarter of 2022, where the balance was (+71), it was noted that the number of incorporations increased (from 279 to 341), and dissolutions decreased (from 208 to 154). By sector, it is observed that the most pronounced positive balance comes from "Accommodation and food service activities" (+43), "Real estate activities" (+31), "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (+22), "Information and communication activities" (+20), and "Transportation and storage" (+17). Conversely, "Extractive industries" (-2), "Agriculture, farming of animals, hunting and forestry," "Financial and insurance activities," "Education," and "Other service activities" (the latter with a balance of -1) were the only sectors where the number of dissolutions exceeded incorporations.
Regarding the municipalities that contributed the most to the overall balance in the 4th quarter of 2023, they were Funchal (+133), Santa Cruz (+18), Calheta (+12), and Machico (+9).
