In the first half of 2024
Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions (+471) was identical to the same period last year
According to data provided by the Directorate-General for Policy of Justice to Statistics Portugal, in the first half of 2024, the number of company incorporations (808) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was higher than the number of dissolutions (337), resulting in a positive balance of 471 companies (473 in the same period of the previous year). Compared to the same period last year, there were 57 more incorporations and 59 more dissolutions.

By Economic Activity the most significant positive balances were observed in “Transportation and Storage”(+100), “Accommodation and food services” (+93), “Real estate activities” (+66), “Construction” (+58), “Consulting, scientific, technical, and similar activities” (+40), “Information and communication activities” (+36) and “Administrative and support service activities” (+33). The only sector with a negative balance was “Trade” (-11).
In the first half of 2024, the number of incorporations surpassed dissolutions in all municipalities: Funchal (532 incorporations vs. 271 dissolutions), Santa Cruz (66 incorporations vs. 25 dissolutions), Câmara de Lobos (60 incorporations vs. 7 dissolutions), Calheta (32 incorporations vs. 7 dissolutions), Ribeira Brava (31 incorporations vs. 8 dissolutions), Machico (27 incorporations vs. 7 dissolutions), Ponta do Sol (15 incorporations vs. 2 dissolutions), São Vicente (15 incorporations vs. 4 dissolutions), Porto Santo (12 incorporations vs. 3 dissolutions) Porto Moniz (10 incorporations vs. 1 dissolution) and Santana (8 incorporations vs. 2 dissolutions).
In the first half of the year, the ratio of incorporations to dissolutions in the ARM was 2.40, lower than the national ratio of 3.68.
Focusing on the second quarter of 2024, the balance between company incorporations and dissolutions was +225 (385 incorporations vs. 160 dissolutions). In the same period of the previous year, the balance was +243 (333 incorporations vs. 90 dissolutions).
