In the first quarter of 2024
Balance between the number of incorporation and dissolution of companies was positive (+246), showing growth compared to the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ) to Statistics Portugal (INE), in the first quarter of 2024, the number of company incorporations (423) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was higher than the number of dissolutions (177), resulting in a positive balance of 246 companies. Compared to the same period last year, there were 5 more incorporations and 11 fewer dissolutions, with the balance in the first quarter of 2023 being +230.

Breaking down the data according to the Economic Activity of the businesses, it is noted that the overall positive balance in the first quarter of 2024 was mainly contributed by "Accommodation, food service activities" (+50), "Construction" (+35), "Transportation and storage" (+34), "Real estate activities" (+32), "Administrative and support service activities" (+25), and "Professional, scientific, and technical activities" (+22). Conversely, the only activity with a negative balance was "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (-4).
During the reference period, the number of incorporations exceeded the number of dissolutions in all municipalities of the ARM: in Funchal (273 incorporations versus 137 dissolutions), Câmara de Lobos (38 versus 6), Santa Cruz (38 versus 11), Machico (16 versus 5), Ribeira Brava (14 versus 6), Ponta do Sol (8 versus 1), São Vicente (8 versus 1), Calheta (10 versus 4), Porto Moniz (6 versus 1), Porto Santo (7 versus 3), and Santana (5 versus 2).
Lastly, it should be noted that in the first three months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the ARM was 2.39, lower than the value observed for the country (3.19).
