In the 1st quarter of 2026
Balance between the number of company incorporations and dissolutions decreased compared to the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ) to Statistics Portugal (INE), in the 1st quarter of 2026, the number of company incorporations (357) with headquarters in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the number of dissolutions (116), resulting in a positive balance of 241 companies.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, 76 fewer incorporations and 21 more dissolutions were recorded, with the balance in the 1st quarter of 2025 having stood at +338.
Breaking down the data according to the Economic Activity Classification (CAE Rev.4) of the companies, it can be seen that the overall positive balance in the 1st quarter of 2026 was driven primarily by "Accommodation and food service" (+43), "Professional, scientific, technical and similar activities" (+34), "Construction" (+29), "Real estate activities" (+28), "Arts, entertainment and recreational activities" (+23), "Administrative and support service activities" (+19) and "Telecommunications, computer programming, consultancy, computer infrastructure and other information service activities" (+14). Only "Transportation and storage" presented a negative balance (-1).
In the reference period, the number of incorporations exceeded the number of dissolutions in all municipalities of the ARM: in Funchal (201 incorporations against 74 dissolutions), Santa Cruz (47 against 8), Machico (21 against 3), Ribeira Brava (14 against 3), Câmara de Lobos (28 against 18), Calheta (12 against 2), Ponta do Sol (11 against 1), Porto Santo (8 against 1), Santana (8 against 3), São Vicente (4 against 2) and Porto Moniz (3 against 1).
It should finally be noted that, in the first three months of the year, the ratio between incorporations and dissolutions in the ARM was 3.08, the same as in the country.
