In the 1st quarter of 2026
Release for consumption of the main fuels grew by 5.0% compared to the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Funchal Customs Authority, in the first three months of 2026, the release for consumption of the main fuels (diesel and gasoline) in the ARM stood at around 41.1 million litres, a value 5.0% higher than in the same quarter of the preceding year (39.1 million litres in the 1st quarter of 2025).
Between January and March 2026, 26.4 million litres of diesel were released for consumption, +2.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. With regard to gasoline, the quantities released of 95-octane and 98-octane gasoline stood at around 11.2 and 3.4 million litres, respectively, representing year-on-year changes of +7.5% and +17.0%.
In the case of propane and butane gas, the release for consumption in the reference period stood at around 4.1 and 0.8 thousand tonnes, respectively. In turn, for natural gas, the volume released was 4.9 thousand tonnes.
Average diesel prices increased in the 1st quarter of 2026 compared to the same period of the previous year, whilst average gasoline prices decreased
In the first three months of 2026, the average price of road diesel stood at 1.507 euros, higher than that recorded in the same period of the previous year (1.403 euros) and in the previous quarter (1.459 euros). In the case of 95-octane gasoline, the average price was 1.579 euros, below that observed in the corresponding period of the preceding year (1.590 euros) and in the 4th quarter of 2025 (1.583 euros).
However, the effects of the Middle East conflict on fuel prices become evident when comparing the prices of 95-octane gasoline and diesel between the first and last day of the reference quarter, with increases of 18.8% and 36.7%, respectively.
