In the first half of 2026
Release for consumption of the main fuels grew 0.2% compared with the same period of the previous year
According to data provided by the Funchal Customs Office, in the first six months of 2026, the release for consumption of the main fuels (diesel and gasoline) in the ARM stood at around 82.9 million litres, a value 0.2% higher than in the same half-year of the previous year (82.8 million litres in the first half of 2025).
In the first half of 2026, 52.3 million litres of diesel were released for consumption, -2.4% compared with the same period of the previous year. With regard to gasoline, the quantities released of 95-octane and 98-octane gasoline stood at around 24.1 and 6.5 million litres, respectively, representing changes compared with the same period of the previous year of +4.9% and +5.2%, respectively.
In the case of propane and butane gas, the release for consumption in the period in question stood at around 6.7 and 1.6 thousand tonnes, respectively (+1.8% and -5.9% compared with the same period of the previous year). In turn, for natural gas, the volume released was 12.6 thousand tonnes (+0.2% year-on-year).
Narrowing the scope of the analysis to the second quarter of 2026, the release for consumption of the main fuels (diesel and gasoline) stood at around 41.9 million litres, a value 4.1% lower than in the same period of the previous year. In this quarter, demand for road diesel was 25.9 million litres (-7.0% compared with the same quarter of 2025). For gasoline, 95-octane gasoline showed an increase of 2.7%, while 98-octane gasoline showed a decrease of 5.4%, compared with the same period of the previous year, with releases for consumption in the months of April to June 2026 amounting to 12.9 and 3.1 million litres, respectively.
Average maximum retail price of fuels increased in the second quarter of 2026
According to data provided by the Regional Directorate for Trade, Industry and Quality, in the second quarter of 2026, the average maximum retail price of road diesel stood at 1.843 euros, higher than that recorded in the same period of the previous year (1.410 euros) and in the previous quarter (1.507 euros). In the case of 95-octane gasoline, the average maximum price was 1.818 euros, above that recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year (1.558 euros) and that observed in the first quarter of 2026 (1.579 euros).
