In the first six months of 2023
Electric energy production increased by 1.5% year-on-year
In the first half of 2023, electric energy production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Madeira Electricity Company, increased by 1.5% year-on-year.
Breaking down the data by source, which totalled around 447.3 Gigawatt hours (Gwh), it is noteworthy that, in comparison to in the first half of 2022, the electricity generated by wind power decreased by 22.4%, hydropower by 18.6%, and urban solid waste power by 5.3%. However, this decline was offset by the growth in production through other sources, mainly thermal power, which increased by 13.5%, and photovoltaics, which rose by 10.3%.As a result, the share of distributed energy using thermal sources went from 59.1% in the first six months of 2022 to 66.2% in the reference period, resulting in a decrease in the production of renewable energy to a share of 33.8% in the first half of 2023 (40.9% year-on-year).
It is also worth mentioning that the production of natural gas represented 9.4% of the total production mix (17.6% in the same period in 2022), despite a 46.1% decrease year-on-year.
Narrowing the analysis to the second quarter of 2023, the data reveals that the distribution of electricity stood at 224.4 GWh, showing a 1.4% year-on-year increase.
