In the first nine months of 2023
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) increased by 2.2% when compared to the corresponding period
During the first nine months of 2023, the estimated electricity production, based on data from the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), witnessed a year-on-year increase of 2.2%.
An analysis of the composition of electrical energy distributed during this time frame, totalling approximately 695.5 Gigawatt hours (GWh), reveals a greater presence of thermal power sources (+9.0%) and photovoltaic sources (+8.6%), while hydropower (-17.9%) and wind power (-15.1%) decreased. The portion of total energy generated using thermal power sources increased from 66.3% to 70.7% between the first nine months of 2022 and the current reference period. Consequently, the share of renewable energy decreased to 29.3%, compared to 33.7% in the first nine months of 2022.
It is worth noting the decline in natural gas as a source for electrical energy production, accounting for 12.1% of the total, compared to 16.0% during the same period in 2022. This represents a 22.8% reduction year-on-year in electricity production from this source.
Narrowing the analysis to the third quarter of 2023, the distribution of electrical energy amounted to 248.2 GWh, which marks a 3.5% increase when compared to the corresponding period.

Production of electrical energy reached its highest value in the last 11 years in 2022
Following the information released by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) on October 13, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) now provides data on the gross production of electrical energy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the year 2022.
The gross production of electrical energy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2022 exceeded 935.6 GWh, representing a 5.3% increase compared to 2021. This quantity is the highest it has been since 2012. In 2022, 72.2% of the energy production originated from thermal power sources, 15.2% from wind power, 9.2% from hydropower sources, and 3.4% from photovoltaic sources.
