In the first quarter of 2024

Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.7%, with a significant contribution from renewable sources

The electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), estimated from the electricity distribution data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), increased by 2.7% in the first quarter of 2024, in year-on-year terms.

Analysing the composition of electrical energy distributed during the reference period - totalling around 228.9 Gigawatt hours (GWh) - it is observed that, compared to the period from January to March 2023, there was a greater predominance of wind power sources (+73.3%), urban solid waste (+8.8%), and photovoltaic source(+5.2%) in energy production, at the expense of thermal (-11.9%) and hydropower sources (-2.5%). Consequently, the proportion of total energy emitted from thermal sources decreased from 64.4% in the first quarter of 2023 to 55.2% in the same quarter of 2024, while the share of renewables reached 44.8% in the period under analysis (compared to 35.6% in the same quarter last year). Since the beginning of the available series (first quarter of 2009), this is the second-highest percentage of electricity production from renewable sources, after the first quarter of 2022 (45.3%).

Finally, it is worth noting the significant recovery of natural gas's importance as a source of electricity production, accounting for 17.5% of the total (compared to 6.2% in the same period in 2023), with electricity production from this source almost tripling compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
