In 2023
Electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.7% compared to the previous year
In 2023, the electricity production, estimated from the data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), increased by 2.7% compared to the previous year.
Analysing the composition of electrical energy distributed in 2023 - totalling around 934.9 Gigawatt hours (GWh) - it is observed that, compared to 2022, there was a greater prevalence of photovoltaic (+10.5%) and thermal (+9.8%) sources, at the expense of hydropower (-23.2%) and wind power (-15.1%) sources.
The share of total energy emitted from thermal sources increased, rising from 67.5% in 2022 to 72.1% in 2023, meaning that, in the same order, the share of renewable energy decreased from 32.5% to 27.9%.
Natural gas also stands out as a source of electrical energy production, accounting for 13.2% of the total (13.8% in 2022), representing a decrease of 1.8% compared to 2022, in electricity production from this source.
Narrowing the analysis to the 4th quarter of 2023, it is observed that the distribution of electrical energy was 239.4 GWh, with an increase of 4.2% year-on-year.
