In the first nine months of 2025
Electricity generation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.0% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year
The electricity production, estimated from data on electricity distribution provided by Madeira Electricity Company (Empresa de Eletricidade da Madeira – EEM), increased by 2.0% in the first nine months of 2025, compared with the same period of 2024.
An analysis of the electricity production mix during the period under review — which totalled approximately 722.5 gigawatt hours (GWh) — shows that, compared to January to September 2024, there was a greater contribution from hydroelectric (+114.7%), photovoltaic (+13.5%) and urban solid waste (+0.7%) sources, while contributions from wind power (-15.9%) and thermal sources (-5.2%) declined.
The share of total electricity generated from thermal sources decreased from 67.1% to 62.4% between the first nine months of 2024 and the corresponding period of 2025, meaning that the share of renewable sources increased to 37.6% from 32.9% in the first nine months of 2024.
It should be noted that natural gas remained a predominant source for electricity production, accounting for 19.1% of total production (16.4% in the same period of 2024). Electricity production from this source recorded an absolute increase of 18.9% year-on-year.
When the analysis is narrowed to the third quarter of 2025, electricity distribution amounted to 254.9 GWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.1%.
