Total electricity consumption increased by 1.9% year on year
According to the information released by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) on 28 November, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira is today making available data on gross electricity production, consumption and the number of electricity consumers in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), with reference to 2024.
Gross electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2024 amounted to 976.4 GWh, representing an increase of 2.5% compared with 2023. An analysis by source of production shows that 72.4% was thermal, 16.6% wind, 7.1% hydroelectric and 3.9% photovoltaic.
The total electricity consumption was approximately 891.4 GWh, an increase of 1.9% compared with the previous year. By type of customer, the most pronounced change was observed in the “Agriculture” segment, which recorded an increase of 5.9% compared with 2023. This was followed by the “Domestic” segment, with an increase of 5.0% (accounting for 34.5% of total consumption), and the “Non-domestic” segment, with an increase of 1.7% (representing 42.9% of total consumption). In contrast, decreases were recorded in “State Buildings” (-9.2%), “Industry” (-0.9%) and “Public Street Lighting” (-0.2%).
By municipality, the most significant increases in consumption were recorded in Machico (+4.5%), Santana (+2.5%), Santa Cruz (+2.2%) and Funchal (+2.0%). In the opposite direction, only the municipality of Porto Santo registered a decrease, at -4.4%.
With regard to the number of electricity consumers, an increase of 1,643 (+1.1%) was observed in the year under analysis compared with 2023, bringing the total to 147 382 consumers, the highest figure ever recorded. By municipality, Calheta led the increase with +2.1%, while the remaining municipalities recorded more moderate changes, ranging from +0.7% in Porto Santo to +1.5% in São Vicente and Porto Moniz.
