In the 1st half of 2026
Electricity generation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 4.5% compared with the same period the previous year
The electricity production, estimated from electricity distribution data supplied by Madeira Electricity Company (Empresa de Eletricidade da Madeira – EEM), increased by 4.5% in the 1st half of 2026, year-on-year.
Analysing the mix of electricity production in the reference period - the total of which stood at around 488.8 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) - it can be seen that, compared with the January to June 2025 period, there was an increase in all sources, with photovoltaic (+21.3%), wind (+15.8%) and hydro (+5.1%) sources standing out. Municipal solid waste and thermal sources also registered increases, albeit more modest ones, of 0.9% and 0.4%, respectively. Consequently, the share of total electricity distribution from thermal sources fell from 56.2% in the 1st half of 2025 to 54.0% in the reference period, meaning that the share of renewable sources increased, standing at 46.0% (43.8% in the first six months of 2025).
It is worth noting the growing importance of natural gas as a source for electricity production, accounting for 20.7% of total electricity distribution in the first six months of 2026 (18.1% in the same period of 2025), with electricity production from this source increasing by 19.6% compared with the same period the previous year.
Narrowing the scope of the analysis to the 2nd quarter of 2026, electricity production stood at 241.1 GWh, corresponding to an increase of 3.7% year-on-year.
