In the 1st quarter of 2026,

Electricity generation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 5.3%, with a strong contribution from renewable sources

The electricity production, estimated from data on electricity distribution provided by Madeira Electricity Company (Empresa de Eletricidade da Madeira – EEM), increased by 5.3% in the 1st quarter of 2026, in year-on-year terms.

An analysis of the electricity production mix for the reference period — which totalled around 247.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) — shows that, compared with the period from January to March 2025, there was a greater share of wind (+23.0%), photovoltaic (+22.6%), hydroelectric (+21.7%) and urban solid waste (+6.2%) sources, at the expense of thermal sources (-8.6%).

Consequently, the share of total electricity generation from thermal sources decreased from 52.2% in the 1st quarter of 2025 to 45.3% in the 1st quarter of 2026, meaning that the share of renewables in the latter period reached 54.7%, above the 47.8% observed in the same quarter of the previous year.

It should finally be noted that natural gas remains the predominant source for electricity production, accounting for 19.0% of the total (17.6% in the same period of 2025), with an increase of 13.7% recorded year-on-year in electricity production from this source.
