DREM releases the local administration accounts of 2019

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a set information about the Local Administration Accounts of 2019, following the release made in last April on this subject. These data are released every year in the “Statistical Yearbook of the Autonomous Region of Madeira”, being also available on the Statistics Portugal website. The source of the information is the SIIAL database (Integrated Information System for Local Government) of the Directorate-General for Local Authorities and is based on a cash basis rather than an accrual logic.

The main results are the following:

  • In 2019 the municipalities’ receipts per inhabitant were 703 euros (697 euros in 2018).
  • The debt per inhabitant decreased from 304 euros in 2018 to 284 euros in 2019.
  • The ratio between receipts and expenditures stood at 101.8% in 2019.
  • The percentage of taxes in the total receipts went down from 32.9% in 2018 to 31.7% in 2019.
  • In 2019, the ratio of the compensation of employees in the total expenditure was 35.7% (35.9% in 2018).
  • In the reference year, the municipalities’ receipts increased by 1.0% to 178.7 million euros. Of this total, 91.0% were current receipts and 9.0% capital receipts.
  • The municipalities’ expenditures topped 175.6 million euros in 2019, 6.7% above 2018. The component of current expenditures rose by 5.9% and capital expenditures increased by 10.5% compared to the previous year. In 2019, current expenditures represented 80.4% of total expenditures, and capital expenditures, 19.6%.
  • In 2019, the municipalities’ debt stood at 72.3 million euros (77.2 million euros in 2018). The short term bank loans increased, with its share in the total debt from 20.4% in 2018 to 22.3% in 2019, while the medium and long term debt dropped by 8.7%, representing 77.7% of the total debt (79.6% in 2018).
