Share of gross expenditure on Research and Development (R&D) in the GDP of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 0.39%

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a time series on the subject of ​​"Science and Technology" in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, updated with data for 2018.

In the reference year, the share of research and development (R&D) expenditure in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was 0.39%, 0.04 percentage points (p.p.) above the share of 2017, year in which this indicator stood at 0.35%. It should be noted this is the highest value for this indicator, for which the time series begins in 2010. When compared with other regions of the country, the data show that the two Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira and the region of Algarve have similar results in this metric, standing below the national average. In 2018, the expenditure on R&D in the Portuguese GDP was 1.36%, while the Autonomous Region of Azores, with 0.32% and the Algarve, with 0.34% had a percentage below the ARM. Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (1.63%) and Norte (1.53%) appear as the regions with the best performance in this indicator.

The proportion of full-time equivalent R&D personnel in the active population in 2018 was 4.00 for 1,000 active persons, representing the highest figure in the period 2003-2018. In turn, the ratio for researchers was 0.30%, also a record high for this indicator.

A total of 60 research units were active in the ARM in 2018, employing 539 people (in full-time equivalent), the highest value ever for this indicator. The majority of the personnel worked in tertiary education (43.3%), in the enterprises (35.1%) and in the State (21.2%), where is also included the Regional and Local Administrations.

R&D expenditure amounted to 19.0 million euros in 2018, up by 13.7% from the 2017, thus resuming the growth interrupted in the previous year.

In 2018, tertiary education had the lead in the R&D activities in the ARM, accounting for 43.7% of the total expenditure in those type of activities, followed by the enterprises (32.1%) and the State (23.8%).

The State was the main source of financing R&D expenditure in the ARM, concentrating almost two thirds (65.0%) of the total in 2018, followed by the enterprises with 21.7%. In 2018, State funding stood at 12.3 million euros, up by 24.2% from 2017.

As for the scientific or technological areas where there was R&D spending, since 2011 the social sciences, humanities and the arts stood out compared to the other areas. In 2018, expenditure on R&D in this scientific area was 3.6 million euros, followed by engineering and technology sciences, with 2.5 million euros and natural sciences, with 2.3 million euros.

In the 2016-2018 period, 33.5% of the enterprises headquartered in the ARM had innovation activities, a percentage which stands above the country by 1.1 percentage points (pp). As for the innovation intensity of the Region’s enterprises - an indicator that corresponds to the percentage of total innovation expenditure in the turnover of enterprises that declared innovation expenditure - it stood at 3.2% in the 2016-2018 period, also 1.7 pp above the country.
