In 2022
R&D expenditure in the Autonomous Region Madeira increased compared to the previous year, but at a slower pace than the Gross Domestic Product
In 2022, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), the share of expenditure on research and development (R&D) as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 0.40%, which is 0.05 percentage points (pp) lower than in 2021, when this indicator stood at 0.45%. The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (2.01%) and the regions of Norte (1.99%) demonstrated the best performance in this indicator. Substantially below the national average (1.70%), but close between themselves, are the regions of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (0.40%), Autonomous Region of Azores (0.46%), and Algarve (0.47%). The reduction in the ratio observed in the Autonomous Region of Madeira results from the fact that the increase in expenditure on R&D (numerator) was lower than the increase calculated for nominal GDP (denominator).
In 2022, the ratio of personnel (full-time equivalent) engaged in R&D in the active population in the ARM was 4.5 per thousand persons, representing a slight increase compared to the previous year (4.2). Meanwhile, the ratio for researchers was 0.31%.
In 2022, the ARM counted 80 research units (+14 than in 2021), employing 597 full-time equivalent persons, which is 56 more than the previous year. The majority of these employees were in Enterprises (45.7%), followed by the Government (27.8%), which includes Regional Public Administration and Local Government and, lastly, Education ( 26.5%).
R&D expenditure in 2022 amounted to approximately 23.9 million euros, an increase of 5.8% compared to the previous year (22.6 million euros). In the reference year, Enterprises led R&D activities in the ARM in terms of expenditure, accounting for 51.4% of the expenses in that regard, followed by Government (25.8%) and Tertiary Education (22.8%). It is worth noting that, for the fourth consecutive year and since the beginning of the time series, Enterprises concentrated the largest share of R&D expenditure, a ranking position previously held by Tertiary Education (between 2003 and 2018).
Throughout the years of available data, the Government has consistently been the main funder of R&D expenditure in the ARM, accounting for 52.4% of the total in 2022, followed by enterprises with 39.8%. Government funding amounted to 12.5 million euros, an increase of 11.4% compared to 2021.
In 2022, the scientific or technological field with the highest R&D expenditure in the ARM was natural science, marking the first year in this regard. R&D expenditure in the field of natural science amounted to 2.6 million euros, followed by exact sciences with 2.5 million euros, and social sciences, humanities, and arts with 2.4 million euros.
