12-month average rate of change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI)  fell to 3.6%

In May 2025, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a 12-month average rate of change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 3.6%, representing a decrease of 0.1 percentage points (pp) compared with the previous month.

The underlying inflation indicator — the indicator that excludes unprocessed food and energy products — stood at 3.9%, down by 0.1 pp from April.

The prices of goods increased by 2.3%, while services recorded a more significant rise of 5.4%.

The largest positive changes were observed in the expenditure classes of “Restaurants and Hotels” (10.3%), “Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels” (5.0%), and “Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco” (4.0%). Conversely, the class “Clothing and Footwear” recorded the smallest change, with an increase of 0.1%.

In Portugal as a whole, the average change in the CPI stood at 2.4%, remaining unchanged from the previous month.

In year-on-year terms — that is, comparing May 2025 with the same month of 2024 — the rate of price change in the ARM was 3.2%, 0.4 pp lower than in the previous month. At the national level, the year-on-year rate stood at 2.3%, up by 0.2 pp compared with April 2025.

On a monthly basis, in May 2025, the CPI in the Region decreased by 0.1%, following an increase of 2.1% in the previous month. Nationally, the monthly change was 0.3%, lower than the 0.7% recorded in April.

In May 2025, the average housing rent per square metre of floor area in the Region rose by 0.4% compared to the previous month, and by 7.4% year-on-year (compared to 0.4% and 7.5% in the previous month, respectively).
