Balance of loans granted to non-financial companies decreased year-on-year, while loans to households increased
According to data provided by the Bank of Portugal, at the end of the second quarter of 2026, the balance of loans granted to non-financial companies (NFCs) headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) stood at 1 792.3 million euros. This figure represents a decrease of 26.4 million euros (-1.5%) compared with the end of June 2025, and an increase of 34.5 million euros (+2.0%) compared with the end of March 2026.
The NFC non-performing loan ratio remained unchanged compared with the end of March 2026 and the year-on-year period, standing at 1.0% at the end of June 2026. At the national level, this indicator stood at 1.8% at the end of the second quarter of 2026, 0.1 percentage points (pp) lower than the previous quarter and the year-on-year period.
In the reference period, the amount of non-performing loans of NFCs headquartered in the Region stood at 17.4 million euros, down by 0.3 million euros (-1.7%) over the end of March 2026 and down by 1.0 million euros (-5.4%) over June 2025.
The percentage of debtors in the NFC sector with non-performing loans stood at 13.3% at the end of June 2026, below the national average (13.6%). Compared with June 2025, this indicator decreased by 0.7 pp in the Region and by 0.9 pp nationally.
In the households and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households (NPISH) sector, the balance of loans granted totalled 3 431.9 million euros at the end of the second quarter of 2026, corresponding to a year-on-year increase of 285.0 million euros (+9.1%). Compared with the end of the previous quarter, there was likewise an increase of 61.2 million euros (+1.8%). Looking at the composition of this balance, 74.1% corresponded to housing loans, with the remaining 25.9% attributable to consumer credit and other purposes.
In the reference quarter, the non-performing loan ratio for this sector stood at 0.7%, identical to the figure observed at the national level, representing a decrease of 0.2 pp compared with the year-on-year period and of 0.3 pp compared with the end of the previous quarter. In the housing credit segment, this ratio remained at its minimum of 0.1% (0.2% nationally), although it decreased by 0.1 pp compared with the year-on-year period. In the consumer credit and other purposes segment, the ratio stood at 2.5%, identical to the figure recorded nationally, having decreased by 0.7 pp compared with the previous quarter and by 0.2 pp year-on-year.
With regard to non-performing loans, these totalled 25.6 million euros at the end of June 2026, of which 3.0 million euros corresponded to the housing segment and 22.6 million euros to consumer credit and other purposes. Overall, there was a reduction of 4.8% compared with the year-on-year period and of 20.0% compared with the previous quarter. In housing credit, there were likewise decreases of 30.2% year-on-year and of 11.8% compared with the previous quarter. In consumer credit and other purposes, there was a quarterly decrease of 21.0%, contrasting with a slight year-on-year increase of 0.4%.
The number of debtors in the households and NPISH institutional sector grew, compared with the year-on-year quarter, to 105 600 (+1 600; +1.5%), of whom 43 200 were debtors with housing loans (+400; +0.9%) and 90 100 with consumer credit and other purposes loans (+1 300; +1.5%).
The percentage of debtors (households and NPISH) with non-performing loans in the ARM was, at the end of the second quarter of 2026, 6.2% in the ARM and 7.2% in Portugal. Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, the ratio in the ARM remained unchanged, while decreasing by 0.2 pp nationally.
Deposits grow for households and NFCs year-on-year, but continue to fall for emigrants
At the end of the second quarter of 2026, deposits by households and NPISH reached the highest value in the series that began in December 2018, standing at 4 588.6 million euros. This amount represents an increase of 4.7% compared with the year-on-year period and of 1.8% compared with the previous quarter.
In the NFC sector, deposits amounted to 2 099.4 million euros, corresponding to a year-on-year change of +8.8% and a decrease of 2.4% compared with the end of the previous quarter.
In turn, the balance of emigrants' deposits stood at 117.7 million euros, recording a year-on-year and quarterly decrease of 21.0% and 4.2%, respectively.
