In the 3rd quarter of 2014

Cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered year-on-year increases, although below the national average

Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the third quarter of 2014 show that cash withdrawals increased by 2.8% on year-on-year terms, while purchases through automatic payment terminals grew by 3.4%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 10.6% year-on-year increase.

Breaking down the data concerning withdrawals, we can see that in the period of reference, international cards were used to withdraw 23.0 million Euros  (4.7% y-o-y increase), while the amount of withdrawals  using national cards totalled 152.4 million Euros, 2.5% more than in the corresponding period of 2013.

At the country level, the rates of change were higher for total (+3.1%) and international withdrawals (+10.5%), but lower in the case of national withdrawals (+2.3).

Between January and September 2014, cash withdrawals grew by 3.0% in Madeira and 1.2% in Portugal, vis-a-vis the same period of 2013.

Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the third quarter was higher in Portugal (+7.4%) than in Madeira (+3.4%).  The same is also true for the first nine of months of 2014, with the growth in Portugal (+6.1%) being sharper than in Madeira (+3.9%).
