The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is releasing the first data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of July 2023, based on information provided by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal.
During the reference month, there were 471.8 thousand passengers recorded at the ARM airports, transported by 3,200 commercial aircraft, reflecting year-on-year changes of 10.0% and 5.9%, respectively. When compared to July 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also a growth of 42.6% in passenger traffic and 30.5% in aircraft movements.
Considering the first seven months of 2023, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were 17.0% and 26.3%, respectively.
Each aircraft (combining landings and takeoffs) transported an average of approximately 152 passengers at Madeira Airport (147 in July 2022), while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure reached 106 passengers (102 in July 2022).

In July 2023, both domestic and international passenger traffic at the ARM airports recorded positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic (+17.8%) showing stronger growth compared to the domestic segment (+2.8%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), both segments experienced growth, with domestic traffic increasing by 47.4% and international traffic by 38.2%.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (53.9%) exceeded domestic traffic (46.1% of the total). Porto Santo Airport had a predominance of domestic traffic (80.2% of the total), with a more significant disproportion compared to the previous June.
