DREM releases transport statistics for the first semester of 2023
The Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) is releasing today the data for the first semester of 2023 regarding the various modes of transportation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Land Transport - Increases in all indicators compared to the first semester of 2022
According to data collected by DREM, public transportation by bus recorded a total of 13.3 million passengers in the first semester of 2023, with urban lines accounting for approximately 8.6 million passengers and interurban routes carrying 4.8 million passengers. Compared to the first semester of 2022, there was an 11.3% increase in the total number of passengers transported, with a growth of 14.6% in urban lines and 5.9% in interurban lines.
Between January and June 2023, more than 668,000 tickets were sold for cable cars in the Region, representing an increase of 42.5% compared to the same period in 2022 and a 43.0% growth when compared to the same months in 2019. Of these tickets, 94.0% were purchased by adults, 3.9% by children, and the remaining 2.1% by other types of users (e.g., farmers, residents, students, etc.). During the same period, total revenue reached approximately 8.4 million euros, reflecting a 52.6% growth when compared to the same period in the previous year (+57.3% compared to the same period in 2019). It's worth noting that in the second quarter of 2023, there were year-over-year increases in ticket sales (+17.0%) and revenue (+21.1%), although when compared to the second quarter of 2019, the increases were more substantial, at +44.5% and +60.9%, respectively.
Furthermore, the Regional Conservatories recorded the transfer of ownership of 7,296 used vehicles in the first semester of 2023, of which 86.4% were passenger cars and 12.4% were cargo vehicles. There were also 83 heavy vehicles registered, making up approximately 1.1% of the total. Compared to the same semester in 2022, the total number of registrations increased by 320, representing a year-over-year increase of 4.6% (+621 vehicles and +9.3% compared to the first semester of 2019). In the second quarter of 2023, this indicator showed a slight decrease (-0.8%) compared to the same quarter of the previous year (+9.4% compared to the second quarter of 2019).
According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal from the Institute of Registers and Notary, in the first semester of 2023, a total of 3,280 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents an increase of 824 vehicles over the same period of 2022 (+1,134 vehicles than in 2019). Between April and June 2023, the acquisition of 1,550 vehicles was recorded, which, compared to the same quarter of 2022, represented a growth of 146 vehicles.
As for provisional data provided by the Regional Command of Madeira of the Public Security Police (PSP), there were 1,774 road accidents with police intervention in the first semester of 2023, representing a year-over-year increase of 20.6% (+15.6% compared to the first semester of 2019). There were 568 victims, up by 72 over the same period of 2022 but 70 fewer than in the first semester of 2019. Of these victims, 511 were classified as minor injuries, 51 as serious injuries, and 6 as fatal victims.
Air Transport - Passenger traffic at ARM airports increased by 30.3% in the first semester of 2023
The Autonomous Region of Madeira airports experienced a passenger traffic volume of approximately 2,310.3 thousand passengers in the first semester of 2023, marking a positive year-over-year change of 30.3%. Compared to the same semester in 2019, there was a 41.7% increase. Both airports in the ARM saw an increase in passenger traffic, with Madeira and Porto Santo reporting year-over-year changes of +30.4% and +27.3%, respectively. When compared to the same period in 2019, the growth was even more significant, with Madeira at +41.0% and Porto Santo at +58.1%. In the second quarter of 2023, there was a year-over-year increase of 9.9% (+40.3% compared to the same quarter in 2019) in passenger traffic at all airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Regarding air cargo, there was a year-over-year decrease of 4.0% in the first semester of the year (-10.8% compared to the first semester of 2019) at ARM airports. While the airport in Madeira saw a decrease of 7.4% (-14.0% compared to the same semester in 2019), the Porto Santo airport experienced significant growth, with a 214.5% increase (+185.3% compared to the same semester in 2019) in this indicator. In both ARM airports, unloaded goods increased by 8.3% (+6.9% compared to the same period in 2019), but loaded goods decreased by 33.0% (-43.6% compared to the first semester of 2019).
Maritime Transport - Goods movement in ports on the rise
In the field of maritime transport, there were 155 cruise ships entering ARM ports in the first semester of 2023 (20 fewer than in the same period the previous year). When compared to the first semester of 2019, there were four additional ships that made stops at the region's ports. Despite the lower number of stops compared to the previous year, the number of transit passengers (328,246) significantly increased compared to the first semester of the previous year (+104.3%; +4.5% compared to the same period in 2019).
In the first semester of 2023, the Port of Funchal received 327,646 transit passengers, with the majority (86.2%) being Europeans. The predominant nationalities were German (43.0% of the total; +87.2% year-over-year change), British (33.4% of the total; +105.3%), French (1.6% of the total; +194.4%), and Italian (1.3% of the total; +34.4%). It's noteworthy that the number of North Americans passing through the Port of Funchal this semester was 24,706 passengers (7.5% of the total), representing a 140.2% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
In the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers in the first semester of the current year reached 154.3 thousand, showing a 32.1% increase compared to the same semester in 2022 and a 4.6% increase compared to the same semester in 2019. In the second quarter of 2022, the number of passengers on this line increased by 32.9% year-over-year, but when compared to the values of the same quarter in 2019, the increase was smaller at 7.8%.
Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira’s ports during the reference semester, it was generally positive compared to the same period in the past four years (+8.1% compared to the same period in 2022; +20.0% compared to the same semester in 2019). This change was driven by an increase in unloading (+9.8% year-over-year; +21.9% compared to the first semester of 2019) while loading experienced a year-over-year decrease of 4.1% (+6.1% compared to the same period in 2019). It's worth noting that in the second quarter of 2023, the year-over-year increase in total movement of goods was 10.1% (compared to the first semester of 2019, the increase was 22.6%).
