Passenger traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 4.0% year-on-year
According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in July 2024, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded the movement of 490.5 thousand passengers on 3,284 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +4.0% and +2.6%, respectively.
In the first seven months of 2024, aircraft and passenger movements showed changes of +0.2% and +4.2%, respectively.
Each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported an average of approximately 153 passengers (152 in July 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure was 110 passengers (106 in the same month of the previous year).

In July 2024, passenger movement at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 8.7% in international traffic and decreased by 1.1% in the domestic segment.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (56.2%) predominated over domestic (43.8% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was more dominant (83.9% of the total), with a greater disparity compared to June 2024.
During the reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.9% of the total aircraft movements and 94.9% of passengers (90.5% and 92.0%, respectively, in the same period last year).
In July 2024, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 90.4%, with Madeira Airport reaching 90.9% and Porto Santo 83.6%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rates were lower, at 89.3%, 90.2%, and 80.0%, by the same order.
From January to July 2024, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports totalled 2,889.2 thousand. Half of these passengers were involved in traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including both internal and domestic connections (in aggregate 47.4% of the total), while the other half was international traffic (52.6%). Within this international segment, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (29.0%), followed by Germany (20.3%) and France (8.9%).
