Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a growth of 8.9% year-on-year

According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in January 2025, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a movement of 340.9 thousand passengers, transported on 2 582 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +8.9% and +10.6%, respectively.

In the month of reference, Madeira Airport recorded an increase, both in the movement of aircraft (2 417; +11.5% compared to January 2024), and in the number of passengers (330.0 thousand; +9.3%). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a slight decline in both aircraft movement (165; -1.2% compared to the same period of 2024) and in the number of passengers (10.8 thousand; -0.5%).

In January of 2025, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported, on average, approximately 137 passengers (139 in January 2024) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure achieved 66 passengers (65 in January 2024).

In January of 2025, passenger movement at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 16.9% in international traffic (190.3 thousand) and by 0.3% in the domestic segment (150.6 million).

At Madeira Airport, international traffic (56.8%) predominated over domestic (43.2% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a preponderance of domestic traffic (75.5% of the total), but with a lower disproportion compared to the same period in 2024 (76.3% of the total).

In this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 90.4% of the total aircraft movements and 92.3% of passengers (91.3% and 93.1% in 2024, respectively).

In January of 2025, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 77.9%, with Madeira Airport reaching 78.0% and Porto Santo at 75.0%. In the same month of the previous year, the occupancy rate was higher in the two regional airports (79.1%) and Madeira airport (79.3%), while Porto Santo airport had a lower rate (73.8%).

Passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (not considering passengers in transit) totalled 340 thousand in the first month of 2025. Of this, 44.2% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports within national territory, including both domestic and inter-island connections, while 55.8% related to international traffic. In the context of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (30.4%), followed by Germany (22.4%) and Poland (14.1%).
