Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a 4.6% year-on-year growth
According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in February 2025, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a movement of 358.8 thousand passengers, transported on 2 564 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +4.6% and +9.1%, respectively.
In the month of reference, Madeira Airport recorded an increase, both in the movement of aircraft (2 422; +9.8% compared to February 2024), and in the number of passengers (348.8 thousand; +4.5%). At Porto Santo Airport, despite the reduction of aircraft movement (142; -2.1% compared to the same period of 2024), the number of passengers increased (10.0 thousand; +8.7%).
Considering the aggregate of first two months of 2025, changes in aircraft and passenger movements at the ARM were +9.8% and +6.7%, respectively.
In February of 2025, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported, on average, approximately 144 passengers (151 in February 2024) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure approached 71 passengers (64 in February 2024).

In February of 2025, passenger movement at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 14.9% in international traffic (250.0 thousand) and decreased by 6.5% in the domestic segment (153.8 million).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (57.8%) exceeded domestic traffic (42.2% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was predominant (66.2% of the total), showing a greater disparity compared to the same period in 2024 (63.6% of the total).
In this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.1% of the total aircraft movements and 93.3% of passengers (92.2% and 93.7% in February 2024, respectively).
In February of 2025, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 82.5%, with Madeira Airport reaching 82.6% and Porto Santo at 79.4%. Last year, the occupancy rate was higher in the two regional airports (86.1%) and Madeira airport (86.5%), while Porto Santo had a lower occupancy rate (72.7%).
From January to February 2025, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (not considering transit passengers) totalled 698.0 thousand, of which 43.6% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, including domestic and inter-island connections, and 56.4% to international traffic. In the context of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (29.3%), followed by Germany (22.5%) and Poland (13.5%).
