Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira rose by 2.9% year-on-year

According to information provided by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in July 2026, the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports recorded 580.1 thousand passengers, carried on 3 857 aircraft (commercial flights), representing year-on-year changes of +2.9% and +2.1%, respectively.

In the month under review, Madeira Airport recorded a rise in the number of passengers (541.0 thousand; +3.2% compared with July 2025) and in aircraft movements (3 522; +3.3%). At Porto Santo Airport, by contrast, there was a decrease in the number of passengers (39.1 thousand; -1.0%) and in aircraft movements (335; -8.5%).

In the first seven months of 2026, changes in aircraft and passenger traffic were +1.7% and +3.0%, respectively.

In the month under analysis, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs together) carried an average of around 154 passengers (identical to July 2025) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo this figure reached approximately 117 passengers (108 in the same period in 2025).

In July 2026, passenger traffic at the ARM airports recorded a 2.5% increase in international traffic, totalling 322.2 thousand passengers. In the domestic segment, there was likewise growth of 3.5%, reaching 257.9 thousand passengers.

At Madeira Airport, international traffic (58.4% of the total) predominated over domestic traffic (41.6%). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was predominant (84.0% of the total), though with a smaller share compared with the same period in 2025 (85.2%).

In the month under review, scheduled flights at ARM airports accounted for 94.2% of total aircraft movements and 96.3% of passengers carried, both higher than the figures recorded in July 2025 (91.7% and 93.9%, respectively).

In July 2026, the occupancy rate of aircraft movements at ARM airports stood at around 89.5%, with Madeira Airport reaching 89.6% and Porto Santo 87.2%. In the previous year, the year-on-year occupancy rate was lower for the two regional airports combined (88.2%), at Madeira Airport (88.6%) and at Porto Santo Airport (84.1%).

From January to July 2026, passengers embarked and disembarked at ARM airports (excluding transit passengers) totalled 3 336.2 thousand, of which 43.1% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located within national territory, which includes inter-island and domestic connections, and 56.9% to international traffic. Within the latter, the United Kingdom (26.8%) and Germany (20.0%) were the main countries of origin and destination for international flights at RAM airports. France (10.1%) ranked third, followed by Poland (9.5%) and the Netherlands (6.5%).
