Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports recorded a year-on-year increase of 3.7%

According to information provided by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), a total of 606.2 thousand passengers were recorded at the ARM airports in August 2026, carried on 3 919 aircraft (commercial flights), representing year-on-year changes of +3.7% and +2.5%, respectively.

In the month under review, Madeira Airport recorded an increase in the number of passengers (566.5 thousand; +3.8% compared with August 2025) and in aircraft movements (3 594; +3.3%). At Porto Santo Airport, although there was an increase in the number of passengers (39.7 thousand; +1.8% compared with the same period of 2025), there was a decrease in aircraft movements (325; -5.2%).

In the first eight months of 2026, changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +1.8% and +3.1%, respectively.

In the month under analysis, each aircraft (considering landings and take-offs together) carried, on average, around 158 passengers (157 in August 2025) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport this figure reached approximately 122 passengers (114 in the same period in 2025).

In August 2026, passenger traffic at the ARM airports increased, year-on-year, by 3.5% in international traffic (338.5 thousand) and there was likewise a rise of +4.0% in the domestic segment (267.7 thousand).

At Madeira Airport, international traffic (59.1% of the total) predominated over domestic traffic (40.9%). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was predominant (90.4% of the total), with a larger share compared with the same period in 2025 (88.6%).

In the month under review, scheduled flights at the ARM airports accounted for 94.6% of total aircraft movements and 96.6% of passengers (92.6% and 94.2%, respectively, in August 2025).

In August 2026, the load factor of aircraft operating at RAM airports stood at around 91.9%, with Madeira Airport reaching 92.0% and Porto Santo 91.3%. In the same month last year, the year-on-year load factor was lower for the two regional airports combined (90.3%), at Madeira Airport (90.6%) and at Porto Santo Airport (86.0%).

From January to August 2026, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (excluding transit passengers) amounted to 3 942.2 thousand, of which 43.3% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located in national territory, which includes internal and domestic connections, and 56.7% to international traffic. Within the latter, the United Kingdom (26.7%) and Germany (19.8%) were the main countries of origin and destination for international flights at the ARM airports. France (10.8%) ranked third, followed by Poland (9.1%) and the Netherlands (6.5%).

Coinciding with the release of the August 2026 air transport statistics, DREM is once again making available a dedicated data dashboard on this subject, which has been completely redesigned compared with the initial version.

This feature allows users to interactively consult the data, divided by sub-theme (general summary of indicators, aircraft and passengers, cargo and mail, and IATA destinations) and broken down by indicator, airport and year/month.
