DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2018

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2018 and at the same time updates the tables with data for that year.

The current publication presents the data with the same structure as the monthly publications released from January 2018 onwards, including in the collective tourist accommodation the hotel establishments, rural tourism and tocal accommodation. It also includes a chapter with information concerning time-sharing establishments.

This publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:

Accommodation establishments (total)

- In 2018, the number of overnight stays in the global tourist accommodation (hotel establishments, rural and housing tourism, local accommodation, periodic time-sharing, colonies, campsites and youth hostels) stood at 8.8 million (-0.7% compared to 2017). Residents in Portugal contributed with 969.0 thousand overnight stays, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.4%, while non-resident foreigners originated 7.8 million overnight stays, corresponding to a decrease of 0.9% in this variable.

Tourism accommodation establishments

-The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in 2018 – hotel establishments, rural tourism and local accommodation - stood at 8.4 million (-0.3% compared to 2017).

- Residents in Portugal contributed with 938.3 thousand overnight stays, a year-on-year increase of 1.2%. The national market was the third most important, behind the German and British markets, representing 11.2% of the total.

- Overnight stays from non-resident foreigners originated around 7.4 million overnight stays (88.8% of the total), corresponding to a 0.4% decrease in this variable compared to the previous year. The main markets were Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Denmark and Sweden, which accounted for 79.1% of overnight stays from non-resident foreigners.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 62.4%, dropping by 3.7 percentage points from 2017.

- The average length of stay remained unchanged at 5.2 nights.

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €47.47, dropping by 1.4% from 2017.

Hotel establishments

- In the hotel establishments, the overnight stays decreased by 2.4%, while total revenue and lodging revenue increased by 1.7% and 1.9%, respectively.

- The main markets were the UK (25.7% of the total bednights), Germany (24.7%) and Portugal (10.9%). The British market dropped by 3.5% and the German by 1.4%. The UK maintained the status of most important market.

- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 67.0%, declining by 3.5 percentage points from 2017.

- The average length of stay remained unchanged at 5.3 nights.

- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €51.64 (down by 0.8% from 2017).

Rural tourism

- In rural tourism, the main indicators showed an increase. Bednights grew by 16.2% while total revenue rose by 25.3% and lodging revenue by 22.6%.

Local lodging

 - The indicators of the local accommodation establishments showed a growth in 2018, with bednights increasing by 12.7% to a total of 1,178,514.

Time-sharing

- The establishments with time-sharing reported 661,073 bednights (-3.4% compared to 2017).

- The main markets were the UK (66.3% of the total bednights), Finland (9.0%) and Germany (7.0%).

Golf

 - The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2018, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 66,166 (-1.6% compared to 2017). This activity generated 2.6 million Euros (-6.0%). 75.1% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, Germany and the UK. 59.7% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and the similar, 22.4% by the tour operators and the remaining 17.9% by golf courses themselves.

Movement of passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports

 - According to the data provided by the Ports authority, 536,874 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in 2018, decreasing by 0.1% when compared to the previous year. The number of cruise ships that visited Madeira remained unchanged at 293.
