Overnight stays in the tourist accommodation establishments increased by 150 thousand from July
In line with Statistics Portugal (INE), the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will from now on release a flash estimate of the main monthly indicators of tourist accommodation, based on the Survey on Guest Stays in Accommodation Establishments. The detailed results for August 2020 will be published on October 15th.
According to the flash estimate, in August 2020, the tourist accommodation sector registered 58.4 thousand guests and 266.1 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -59.8% and -71.0%, respectively (-79.4% and -86.0% in July, by the same order). It should be noted that excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 72.3% compared to August 2019, a higher drop than in the country (-47.2%).
Although historically, the month of August usually has a higher number of overnight stays compared to July, it is worth noting the significant difference between the numbers of overnight stays in July (116.4 thousand) and August (266.1 thousand), which are reflected in the annual rates of change presented above.
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 19.4% (-54.4% in July) reaching 127.1 thousand and corresponding to 47.8% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 81.7% (-91.2 % in the previous month), standing at 138.9 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 35.5 thousand, decreasing by 5.1% (-45.5% in July) with non-resident guests estimated at 22.9 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 78.7% (-89.5% in the previous month). In the country, overnight stays from residents decreased by 2.4% (-30.8% in July) reaching 3.4 million and corresponding to 65.9% of the total, while those from non-residents dropped by 72.0% (-84.5% in the previous month), standing at 1.7 million.

The main non-resident markets maintained a significant decrease in August (above 70%), although lower than in the previous month. The UK market recorded the sharpest drop with -84.0% (-97.3% in July), followed by the French market which fell 83.0% (-92.3%) and the German market which had a 71.3% drop (-83.4% in the previous month).
In August, 49.4% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not receive any guests (65.2% in July). However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 68.9% of the establishments with guest flow (54.3% in July).
