Second wave of the pandemic leads to a higher drop in the overnight stays in tourism accommodation compared to the previous 3 months
According to the flash estimate, in November 2020, the tourist accommodation sector registered 25.2 thousand guest arrivals and 143.8 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -72.8% and -73.7%, respectively (-52.4% and -58.5% in October, by the same order). The Autonomous Region of Madeira had a drop in the overnight stats of more than 70%, halting the trend started in May, of progressive smaller year-on-year drops.
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 75.4% compared to November 2019, a smaller drop than in the country (-76.7%).
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 46.4% (-9.9% in October) reaching 31.5 thousand and corresponding to 21.9% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 77.0% (-64.9% in the previous month), standing at 112.3 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 10.1 thousand, decreasing by 54.0% (-13.1% in October) with non-resident guests estimated at 15.1 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 78.7% (-64.2% in the previous month). In the country, overnight stays from residents decreased by 58.6% (-21.7% in October) reaching 543.3 thousand and corresponding to 57.2% of the total, while those from non-residents dropped by 85.2% (-76.4% in the previous month), standing at 407.3 thousand.
In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets registered substantial decreases in overnight stays, above 70%. The French market recorded the sharpest drop, with -85.7% in overnight stays (-80.3% in October), followed by the British market with -72.8% (-46.5%) and the German market with -71.4% (-67.6% in the previous month).
In November, 60.7% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector counted 64.0% of the establishments with a guest flow (72.2% in October).
