Although there was a slight recovery compared to November, there were only 166.2 thousand overnight stays
According to the flash estimate, in December 2020, the tourist accommodation sector registered 31.5 thousand guest arrivals and 166.2 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -64.1% and -66.1%, respectively (-72.6% and -73.9% in November, by the same order). The year 2020, had only 494.0 thousand guests and 2.8 million overnight stays, with sharp falls of 64.3% and 66.1%, respectively.
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 68.7% compared to December 2019, a smaller drop than in the country (-72.3%).
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 41.8% (-47.0% in November) reaching 34.2 thousand and corresponding to 20.6% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 69.4% (-77.2% in the previous month), standing at 132.0 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 11.7 thousand, decreasing by 45.2% (-52.8% in November) with non-resident guests estimated at 19.8 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 70.2% (-78.7% in the previous month).
In the country, in December 2020, overnight stays from residents will have decreased by 53.9% (-58.8% in November), reaching 589.0 thousand, representing 60.6% of the total, while those of non-residents decreased by 82,9% (-85.5% in the previous month), standing at 383.7 thousand. In the year 2020, tourist accommodation establishments recorded 10.5 million guests and 26.0 million overnight stays, corresponding to annual decreases of 61.2% and 63.0%, respectively (+7.9 % and + 4.6% in 2019).

In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets registered substantial decreases in overnight stays, although less pronounced than in November. The French market recorded the sharpest drop, with -76.6% in overnight stays (-87.5% in November), followed by the British market with -67.6% (-73.6%) and the German market with -56.3% (-71.0% in the previous month).
In December, 52.7% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector counted 61.3% of the establishments with a guest flow (64.0% in November).
