Only 114.5 thousand overnight stays were recorded
According to the flash estimate, in January 2021, the tourist accommodation sector registered 17.6 thousand guest arrivals and 114.5 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -77.3% and -78.4%, respectively (-63.9% and -65.9% in December, by the same order).
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 81.2% compared to January 2020, a larger drop than in the country (-78.2%).
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 57.9% (-45.1% in December) reaching 23.4 thousand and corresponding to 20.5% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 80.8% (-68.8% in the previous month), standing at 91.1 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 7.1 thousand, decreasing by 58.0% (-45.7% in December) with non-resident guests estimated at 10.5 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 82.7% (-69.8% in the previous month).
In the country, in January 2021, overnight stays from residents will have decreased by 60.3% (-54.2% in December), reaching 427.0 thousand, representing 60.1% of the total, while those of non-residents will have decreased 87,0% (-83.2% in the previous month), standing at 282.9 thousand.
In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets registered substantial decreases in overnight stays in this month. The British market recorded the sharpest drop, with -91.7% in overnight stays (-66.7% in December), followed by the French market with -78.9% (-75.3%) and the German market with -61.1% (-55.4% in the previous month).
In January, 56.1% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector counted 58.8% of the establishments with a guest flow (60.7% in December).
