In August 2021, the number of guests entering the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the August 2019 figures
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of August 2021 shows that 150.4 thousand guests were registered in the regional establishments, generating 875.9 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +146.4% and +210.9%, respectively. In August 2020, tourism activity recorded only 61.0 thousand incoming guests and around 281,745 overnight stays.
When comparing August 2021 to August 2019, the number of incoming guests increased by 3.7% and overnight stays fell by only 4.4%. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the month of August is the one that presents the number of overnight stays closer to the pre-pandemic figures.
In the first eight months of the year 2021, the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 2.5 million overnight stays (+31.7% than in the same month of 2020 and -56.1% than in the first eight months of 2019).
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows an increase of 26.5%, a more pronounced change than that verified at national level (+11.8%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 88.5% year-on-year, reaching 262.6 thousand and representing 30.0% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 330.5% compared to August 2020, standing at 613.3 thousand. Compared to August 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +66.5%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -19.2%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in 2021, was estimated at 57.0 thousand and the foreign guests at 93.4 thousand.
In the country, in August 2021, the domestic market (share of 56.2%) contributed with 4.2 million overnight stays, the highest monthly value on record, and increased by 24.2%. External markets grew 94.5% and totaled 3.3 million overnight stays.

In the Region, the main source markets of foreign residents recorded a strong recovery in terms of overnight stays when compared to the previous month (+40.4%). In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 181.3 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 91.6 thousand and France with 74.9 thousand.
In August, 19.4% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 84.6% of the establishments with a guest flow (79.1% in July).
