In September 2021, the number of guest arrivals in tourist accommodation establishments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded the pre-pandemic value
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of September 2021 shows that 130.6 thousand guest arrivals were registered generating 765.7 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +137.7% and +171.6%, respectively. In September 2020, Madeira’s tourist accommodation establishments recorded only 55.0 thousand guests and around 281.9 thousand overnight stays.
Comparing September 2021 with September 2019, the number of incoming guests increased by 1.2% and overnight stays had a drop of only 1.6%.
In the first nine months of the year 2021, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 3.2 million overnight stays (+49.9% than in the same month of 2020 and -49.5% than in the first nine months of 2019).
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments shows an increase of 45.8%, a more pronounced change than the one recorded at a national level (+19.5%).
In the Region, overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 89.4% year-on-year, reaching 191.6 thousand and representing 25.0% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 217.7% compared to September 2020, standing at 574.1 thousand. Compared to September 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +66.3%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -13.4%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in 2021, was estimated at 45.3 thousand and the foreign guests at 85.3 thousand.
In the country, in September 2021, the domestic market contributed with 2.6 million overnight stays, an increase of 26.8%. The external markets grew by 100.7% and totalled 3.0 million overnight stays.

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents represented 75.0% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 181.4 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 125.3 thousand and France with 44.5 thousand.
In September, 13.4% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 86.6% of the establishments with a guest flow (84.6% in August).

The detailed results for September 2021 will be released on the 15th of November 2021.
