Flash estimate - In November 2021, for the second consecutive month, overnight stays surpassed the value of the same month of 2019
“Press release rectified on 05/01/22, regarding the year-to-date change, presented according to Statistics Portugal plan of tabulation ”.
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of November 2021 shows that 97.4 thousand guest arrivals were registered corresponding to 571.8 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +288.5% and +304.4%, respectively. In November 2020, Madeira’s tourist accommodation establishments recorded only 25.1 thousand guests and around 141.4 thousand overnight stays.
Comparing November 2021 to November 2019, the number of incoming guests and overnight increased by 5.1% and 4.4%, respectively.
In the first eleven months of the year 2021, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 4.5 million overnight stays (+75.6% than in the same period of 2020 and -40.6% than in the first eleven months of 2019).
When comparing the data released by Statistics Portugal, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows an increase of 73.3%, a more pronounced change than the one recorded at a national level (+40.4%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 197.3% year-on-year, reaching 77.2 thousand and representing 13.5% of the total, while the overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 328.5% compared to November 2020, standing at 494.6 thousand. It should be noted that, compared to November 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +31.4%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at +1.1%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in November 2021, was estimated at 23.7 thousand and the foreign guests at 73.7 thousand.
In the country, in November 2021, the domestic market contributed with 1.3 million overnight stays, an increase of 140.1%. The external markets grew by 486.0% and totalled 2.3 million overnight stays.

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents represented 86.5% of overnight stays. In this set, the Germany market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 153.7 thousand in the month of reference, followed by UK with 128.1 thousand and France with 25.3 thousand.
In November 2021, 24.7% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 87.0% of the establishments with a guest flow (90.3% in October).
