Flash estimate – 5.0 million overnight stays were recorded in the year 2021, a +81.4% growth
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of December 2021 shows that 78.6 thousand guest arrivals were registered generating 451.1 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +147.2% and +169.3%, respectively. In December 2020, tourist accommodation establishments recorded only 31.8 thousand guests and around 167.5 thousand overnight stays.
Comparing December 2021 to December 2019, the number of incoming guests and overnight stays registered a decrease by 10.4% and 8.1%, respectively.
In the year 2021 (preliminary data), the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 5.0 million overnight stays (+81.4% than 2020 and -38.7% than in 2019). The volume of overnight stays is close to what was accounted for at the turn of the century and also in the year 2010 (in which the flash floods of the 20th February occurred).
When comparing the regional data with the country’s, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments showed an increase of 79.8%, a lower change than that recorded at a national level (+170.4%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 135.4% year-on-year, reaching 76.1 thousand and representing 16.9% of the total, while the overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 177.4% compared to December 2020, standing at 375.1 thousand. Compared to December 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was positive, growing by 29.4%, while in the case of foreign residents there was a decrease of 13.2%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in 2021, was estimated at 22.8 thousand and the foreign guests at 55.8 thousand.
In the country, in December 2021, the domestic market contributed with 1.1 million overnight stays, an increase of 92.6%. The external markets were predominant (56.5%) and totalled 1.5 million overnight stays (+292.5%). The annual total was 37.5 million overnight stays, +45.2% than in 2020.

In the Region, for the reference month, the main source markets of non-residents represented 83.1% of overnight stays. In this set, the German market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 113.2 thousand, in December 2021, followed by the UK with 93.5 thousand and France with 17.8 thousand.
In December 2021, 25.6% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. The hotel sector had 84.4% of the establishments with a guest flow (86.4% in November).
