Flash estimate – In February 2022, guest arrivals in the tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were similar to the same month of 2019
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of February 2022 shows that 91.1 thousand guest arrivals were registered generating 455.8 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +666.2% and +674.1%, respectively. In February 2021, Madeira’s tourism accommodation establishments recorded only 11.9 thousand guests and around 58.9 thousand overnight stays.
Comparing February 2022 and February 2019 (pre-pandemic period), the number of incoming guests was similar and overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a drop of 15.8%. However, it should be noted that there were more guests arriving in February 2020 (99.0 thousand) than in the reference period (91.1 thousand).
When comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments shows an increase of 869.6%, a sharper growth than the one recorded at a national level (+527.1%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 312.1% year-on-year, reaching 74.7 thousand and representing 16.4% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 834.9% standing at 381.2 thousand. Compared to February 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +58.4%, while in the case of residents abroad there was a decrease of 22.9%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in 2022, was estimated at 27.3 thousand and the foreign guests at 63.8 thousand.
In the country, in February 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.2 million overnight stays (+251.8% ) and the external markets totaled 1.8 million (+1,173.3% than in February 2021).

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents represented 83.6% of overnight stays. In this set, the UK market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 112.3 thousand followed by Germany with 86.2 thousand and France with 21.4 thousand.
In February 2022, 24.4% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. The hotel sector had 83.1% of the establishments with a guest flow (83.8% in January 2022).
