Flash estimate - In March 2022, the number of guest arrivals in the tourism accommodation was higher than in the same month of 2019, unlike the overnight stays
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of March 2022 shows that 120.7 thousand guest arrivals were registered generating 647.4 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to a very sharp year-on-year change of +529.1% and +667.9%, respectively. In March 2021, Madeira’s tourism accommodation establishments recorded only 19.2 thousand guests and around 84.3 thousand overnight stays.
Comparing March 2022 and March 2019 (pre-pandemic period), the number of incoming guests increased by 4.4%, while overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a drop of 1.0%.
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments shows an increase of 833.1%, a more pronounced change than the one recorded at a national level (+543.2%).
In the Region, overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew 208.9% year-on-year, reaching 103.9 thousand and representing 16.0% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 972.4% compared to March 2021, standing at 543.5 thousand. It should be noted that, compared to March 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +65.3%, while for residents abroad there was a decrease of 8.0%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in March 2022, was estimated at 31.9 thousand and the foreign guests at 88.8 thousand.
In the country, in March 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.3 million overnight stays (+191.5%) and the external markets totaled 2.7 million (+1 435.6%).

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents represented 84.0% of overnight stays. In this set, the German market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 158.4 thousand in the respective month, followed by the UK with 146.8 thousand and France with 32.8 thousand.
In March of 2022, 18.2% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 88.9% of the establishments with a guest flow (85.4% in February 2022).
